In the previous post I mentioned reading about homemade patina methods I could make with regular household products such as white vinegar, salt, ammonia and baking soda that would add a visual dimension in color to the copper jewelry earrings and other pieces I create for Simply Katie’sSK Wire Jewelry. The recipes and instructions for each of the two patina methods (vinegar & salt saturation, and ammonia fuming) are simple and relatively easy to use but I will stress that you follow both patina recipes to a tee or you could end up with an unexpected disaster. I also recommend that you start with a scrap piece of copper or brass so you can gauge the length of time needed to achieve the desired patina effect. You will begin to see the patina process take effect within the first 30 minutes to 24 hours for a light patina and the entire process could take up to 36 hours or more if you desire a heavy patina.
Here I used the vinegar and salt saturation method on both 18 gauge copper wire and 22 gauge sheet copper checking the pieces after about an hour at first and then at about 4 to six-hour intervals after the initial saturation of the pieces.
The 18 gauge wire Fishers of Men earrings in this photo were removed from the saturation at about 24 hours and left out to air dry. In the photos below you can see the remaining salt residue on the 18 gauge copper wire.
Blue pre-rinse Patina
Patina Fishers of Men Copper Earring
I love the tropical blue coloring the salt added to these copper fish earrings and I almost don’t want to rinse off the residue. On the other hand, I also can’t wait to shine up the wire areas untouched by the patina application and seal the new and gorgeous tropical coloring on these Fishers of Men copper wire earrings.
And here is why I agree with the recommendation that it’s best to start with a scrap piece of copper or brass as a test when you’re learning any new technique. You don’t want to end up ruining your gorgeous new project right off the bat. I said earlier that you should follow the recipes to a tee because this too can leave you with a disastrous end result, just take a look at these 22 gauge copper sheet stars. The Vinegar & Salt Patina recipe recommends 3 T vinegar and 3 tsp salt stirred together until the salt can no longer be dissolved. For this experiment I purposely increased the amount of vinegar in the recipe not measuring it at all but generously pouring approximately 1/8 cup into the bottom of the plastic container over the crumpled paper towels and deliberately sprinkled a generous amount approximately 1 T of salt on top of the paper towels. I then laid the stars on the salted paper towels and added another sprinkling of salt directly to the copper stars and placed another layer of vinegar saturated crumpled paper towels atop the copper sheet stars. The stars were left in the solution for about 48 hours and the excess vinegar residue rinsed off upon removal. href=”https://skwirejewelry.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/vinegar-salt-patina-project-eaten-edges.png”> Disaster – Eaten Edges[/caption]
Disaster – Etched Through
You can see in the first photo that the excess vinegar and salt applied directly onto the copper stars has eaten away some of their edges and the second photo shows that the copper is completely etched through and weakened to a useless state.
That's all she wrote for these copper star earring blanks, they're ready for the scrap pile. The Fishers of Men copper wire earrings are another story altogether and I can't wait to see the completed results after they've been cleaned up, polished, sealed and ready to add to www.simplykaties.etsy.com
We’d love to hear from you, share your homemade patina experiments with us.
I don’t know about you but I believe having mentors is a blessing. Mentors have a unique way of sharing their own personal experiences with you in unknown ways especially if they’re not aware of their mentor status. My mentors are fellow jewelry designer/makers who also have jewelry blogs that focus on sharing their knowledge and understanding gained through running their own successful jewelry businesses. And last night as I was reviewing and cleaning out Simply Katie’s inbox, I came across an interesting email newsletter from Rena Klingenburg of Jewelry Making Journal so I stopped to read it. You know, I really I admire the way Rena presents her jewelry and business topics, very comfortable and informal always relevant content for every stage of a handmade jewelry business. There’s always something I can use to tweak Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry and make every aspect a better experience for you.
Anyway, I was reading Rena’s tutorials on homemade patina methods for brass and copper when I came across a great Q & A video she recently posted called Making Your Jewelry Business Meaningful and I was compelled to share it with you. This is something I admit I’ve been struggling with because I wasn’t sure Simply Katie’s message is being heard. Rena’s video was insightful, inspiring and encouraging because her tips were straight in line with what I personally believe, the very message of Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry. You see, I believe jewelry ought to enhance the inner (intangible) and tangible (physical) beauty of a woman, and the inner gentle masculinity of men. Jewelry should not overpower your customers personalities the way in my opinion some designs have a tendency to do. Now I’m not against large chunky, funky statement jewelry or jewelry with a lot of bling, it’s not my style and you won’t find it at Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry. At Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry, enhancing your inner beauty with simple elegant jewelry designs is my business.
In her video Rena gives Jewelry Making Journal readers four tips to make their jewelry business more meaningful to the customer giving them a positive lasting impression. In a nutshell, her Q & A video tips are meant to shift all your focus back onto the customer. How successful my handmade jewelry business is is wholly dependent on where my attention lies whether I’m doing business face to face at local markets or online, my success depends on the experience I give my Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry customers. When you visit and purchase Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry Unique Hand Forged Copper Jewelry designs hand crafted to enhance your natural inner beauty, I’ll continue to give you the undivided attention you deserve because I aim to leave you my customers with the best positive impression you deserve.
As for skwirejewelry.com I admit I have some work to do to make your experience here more memorable, exciting and enticing and I need your help. My goal is to keep SK Wire Jewelry readers coming back for more and to let you know I’m serious about my commitment to you, I’m taking to heart the advice and support offered in Ms. Klingenburg’s video. I’m giving you the undivided attention you deserve, share your comments with SK Wire Jewelry and let me know what you want to read.

It’s funny I had a reader who commented on an article I wrote implying that I give away free money when I give away SK Wire Jewelry handmade wire jewelry designs. This may be true, but it’s how I survive and thrive on a platform full of an abundance of other handmade jewelry creators. This reader also stated that I can’t be an expert at everything, well let me tell you that as a small business owner I don’t want to be an expert at everything, only one – building strong and lasting customer relationships.
Being a small business owner isn’t about me at all, it’s about you! You as a potential customer are more important to growing my small handmade wire jewelry business than my inventory. And if I want to win your over to my side, if I want to gain your trust and gain you as a paying customer I have to make small sacrifices. And if I want to survive and thrive, I have to think of creative ways to get my handmade jewelry designs out in the public eye, and I find that gifting SK Wire Jewelry’s handmade wire or beaded jewelry designs and holding product giveaways on my Facebook page is an effective tactic in my marketing strategy.
I wear many hats as a sole proprietor and oftentimes my roles intermingle with each other, I am never one or the other, I am frequently all or at least a few at any one time. But there’s nothing more satisfying to me as a small handmade wire jewelry business owner with an online storefront on Etsy.com than to have my handmade wire jewelry designs on the ears, necks, fingers or wrists of everyone willing to be a walking billboard for SK Wire Jewelry handmade wire jewelry designs. I love that people want my SK Wire Jewelry designs and I love that they’re sharing my handmade jewelry designs with their social circles and honestly, the small sacrifice of shipping & handling plus a nominal material cost is totally worth it to me especially if my product quality is where it ought to be.
It’s just a smart business growth strategy to employ when you’re a small business owner on a tight budget, word-of-mouth advertising works. And for me, giving SK Wire Jewelry handmade wire jewelry to wear and share to potential customers in their section of this great big world is putting good Christian principle in practice, not to mention I’m reaching vastly wider, and largely culturally diverse social circles and that fits my tight SK Wire Jewelry marketing and advertising budget very effectively. If you have a handmade business and haven’t yet held a giveaway of your handmade products, you really should think about offering your product as a giveaway. It’s easy to do and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your followers will start to grow. Give it a try!

Mom, She Always Said – Never Give Up – 1942 -2011
The fact is, Simply Katie’s SK Wire Jewelry sales are extremely low and do not cover our family’s monthly expenses let alone pay a mortgage. I have a part time job cleaning 60th Street Baptist Church where I am a member and three of us (me, my granddaughter and son) rely on my small church income, Etsy sales, and my sons “as needed” daily pay to live. Both my son and I have been unable to find full-time employment for over 2 years and we are losing our home to foreclosure. It was my moms home, the lender filed foreclosure action against the house 6 days after learning of moms death. I’ve lived here off and on for thirty plus years, it’s the only home my children and my granddaughter have ever known. Please, will you help me keep our family home in the family?
Please Help Me Save My Home
If you are at all able to give even a little bit to help us save my four year old granddaughters home and keep her from becoming another homeless statistic and a ward of the state, I and my son would be grateful beyond measure.
Mom & My Boys August 2010
Trust that God will return your generous donation to you tenfold, even if you can only give five dollars.
“For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened; But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over: and he that had gathered little had no lack.”
II Corinthians 8:12-15 KJV

I’ll personally visit your handmade ETSY shop (or other website) and write a professional review of your handmade items that you can use in your own promotional marketing.
If you’re thinking that your work isn’t perfected yet, or you don’t think you have what it takes to get your hearts passion and artwork featured, I’m here to tell you you’re wrong. I had those same thoughts too when I started selling on ETSY and especially when I started this blog. It’s not perfect and I haven’t got the following I desire to have or the sales YET, but one day I will and you can too. I got my first feature article last year on Megan Petersen’s blog Megans Beaded Designs. She’s a fellow jewelry designer/creator, ETSY shop owner, mentor and a woman who I call a friend. It was so exciting to see my name, my shop even my jewelry in the spotlight on Megan’s blog. It was a big morale booster for me, I know it will be for you too!
Let’s take that step forward together! We can help each other grow, and here’s how?

Are you looking to start 2014 with confidence that this is going to be your year reach your goals and achieve success? I certainly am and I was browsing my LinkedIn network connections this morning for great tips and motivators for starting out on the right foot in business and remain focused, organized and profitable throughout the year.
If you’re like me you probably need an accountability partner to keep your jewelry business on track, help with setting and achieving realistic goals and to help steer you in the direction of realizing the profits you dream of. A mentor is someone who can help you with form and valuate your ideas and goals. Jennifer at Bloom Showroom is one such individual offering mentoring for up and coming jewelry designers looking to get their brand in the eyes and hearts of the public. Check out Bloom Showroom to find out how to reach your goals!
I also found Megan’s article on Beading for Business discussing how the people we associate with can sometimes affect whether we reach success. You may recognize some of these success sucking people that are holding back your successin business and gain peace in our personal lives. I have a few of these people in my social circle that I can do without, not only in my immediate family but in social media groups that would have better success in achieving their goals if they just change the way they think. I mean if you think about it in realistic terms, no-one is or ever will be perfect except Christ himself. We all go through and will continue to have negative experiences in life, but we control what we take away from those experiences.
I hope you find some information in these articles that will point you in the direction of reaching your goals for success!
